Ardent and Ashenafi Argaw
Before Ardent Coffee Export was officially established in 2017, it already existed in spirit, in vision, and in the heart of its founder, Ashenafi Argaw.
Some companies begin with a business plan. Ardent began with a lifetime devoted to coffee.
For Ashenafi, coffee has never been simply a profession. It has been the defining thread running through every chapter of his life. Growing up in Ethiopia’s coffee-producing communities, he experienced coffee as more than a crop—it represented culture, family, hard work, livelihood, and hope. What began as a childhood connection gradually became a lifelong passion and purpose.
After graduating from Addis Ababa University, Ashenafi began his professional career directly in Ethiopia’s coffee industry, joining the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union. There, he gained practical experience and developed a deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s coffee value chain. What had started as a personal connection to coffee was becoming a professional mission.
His pursuit of coffee excellence eventually took him beyond Ethiopia. While living in the United States, Ashenafi continued his journey with Ninety Plus Coffee, one of the internationally recognized names in specialty coffee. His work across Ethiopia, the United States, and Panama expanded his experience in specialty coffee production, quality management, international logistics, global sales, and relationships with coffee professionals around the world.
After years of working on both sides of the Atlantic, Ashenafi brought his experience and long-held vision together to establish Ardent Coffee Export.
The name Ardent was chosen with purpose. It means passionate, devoted, and deeply committed—the same qualities that have defined Ashenafi’s relationship with coffee throughout his life. Ardent was not created simply to export coffee; it was created as the continuation of a lifelong relationship between a person, coffee, and a purpose.
Today, Ardent has grown into an Ethiopian specialty coffee producer and exporter, sharing exceptional coffees with partners across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and beyond. Yet our purpose extends beyond export. We are committed to improving quality, strengthening relationships with coffee-growing communities, supporting farmers, creating meaningful social impact, promoting sustainability, and sharing Ethiopia’s extraordinary coffee heritage with the world.
Ashenafi’s commitment to Ethiopian specialty coffee also extends beyond Ardent. Together with other Ethiopian specialty coffee leaders, he helped establish the Specialty Coffee Association of Ethiopia (SCAE) and serves as its founding President, supporting greater collaboration, quality, innovation, and international recognition for Ethiopian specialty coffee.
Looking back at his journey, one thing has remained constant:
His childhood was coffee.
His education led him to coffee.
His first career was coffee.
His international experience was coffee.His company is coffee.
His leadership serves coffee.
And his legacy will celebrate coffee.
Today, that lifelong journey continues through Ardent—a company built on passion for coffee, commitment to quality, and belief in the extraordinary potential of Ethiopian coffee.
